LOCO

Date : April 8, 2013

LocoMoco_MatsumotoIt’s breakfast time in NYC and I could really go for a Loco Moco like this one from Sam Sato’s on Maui, right about now. Loco Moco, a local favorite in Hawaii, features rice, a hamburger patty, and over-easy egg with brown gravy. It’s 6AM, working on thesis, now that’s loco.

Fresh fish fix. Pronounced “po-keh” this island favorite I something I miss whole away on the mainland. Shoyu poke from Sack ‘N Save is a must have when I’m on Maui.

Woke up in the morning and saw lots of snow. The first photo was caught as I got out of the subway at Union Squaee. After class, visited Serendipity 3 on the Upper East Side for late lunch with friends and the famous frozen hot chocolate. Then a walk through Central Park to end the wintery day. Who new the Maui girl could enjoy a cold day in the city–it really is something.

March 4, a Monday, and the start of a new week. Tired but ready to welcome the 5th, with the help from the neon lights of Chinatown.

Two pictures from today. The first ok celebration of Donut Day! I was first introduced to Donut Day on Maui in high school when my friend David passed out doughnuts on February 14. This year I decided to get some for my friends and carry on the tradition here in New York. On the way to school, the usual view of the Empire State Building on this especially clear winter day. Love this city.

I ate the same thing, two nights in a row. Lots of Japanese going on in this dish.

Not everyone likes Natto, but surprisingly I do. I think it is an acquired taste from a young age. Of course being told you are eating fermented soybeans isn’t always nice to hear, but growing up I don’t think I could pick if I wanted to eat it or not. Before I said I didn’t like something I had to try it first. Most of my friends can’t stand eating the brown beans, but I love it. It’s sticky and has an interesting texture, but mixed with the right stuff (rice, nametake mushrooms, nori, and some sprouts), it makes for a delicious and semi-nutritious combination.
